How Real Madrid wants to ensure satisfaction inside and outside the rebuilt stadium through optimised logistics

I visited Madrid for the first time in March 2018 for a short city trip. It was my first journey to the Iberian Peninsula. I found very cheap tickets on the internet and so the stay was also planned very spontaneously.  The night before departure, I thought about what sights I would like to see within these three days. As a sports fan, I immediately thought of Real Madrid.  Two days later, the time had come and I visited the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Unfortunately, there were no matches taking place at the stadium at that time, as international matches were being played. Nevertheless, I was able to see the inside of the stadium, including the football pitch and the museum. I was very enthusiastic about the tour of the stadium and at the end of the day I was very satisfied to have visited the stadium even though there was no match.

Satisfied is the right keyword here, because with the renovation of the Estadio Bernabeu, the football club wants to ensure more satisfaction inside and outside the stadium walls, especially for the visitors. Therefor, the club has set itself the following modernisation plans, among others:

Security, comfort & accessibility

The improvement and modernisation of access, passageways and evacuation programmes with new doors, escalators and lifts will make the Santiago Bernabéu a modern and more accessible stadium. Spectators should benefit from more comfortable entrances and numerous corridors that will allow easier entry and more efficient evacuation. This should prevent crowding in the run-up to matches and after they have finished.

Operationality & logistics

In an effort to improve the operationality and logistics of the Santiago Bernabéu, a car park is being built, along with a logistic zone.

The new underground car park will provide space for up to five TV broadcast vans, which currently park in the Paseo de la Castellana area two days before the match, causing inconvenience and nuisance to the surrounding area. These are now to be eliminated.

In addition the new car park will offer access to the logistics tunnel, which is being built around the outside of the stadium. The tunnel will feature vertical communications to ensure that all areas of the stadium are suitably supplied. The tunnel will ensure easier and more direct access to supplies for the stadium’s bars, restaurants, VIP areas, toilets, services and first aid points. The goods will come through the tunnel and reach the new car park, before being distributing them efficiently throughout the rest of the stadium. This system will avoid noise pollution and disturbances for the residents who live in the area surrounding the stadium.

PS: I am currently in Valencia for a semester abroad and Madrid is only a stone’s throw away. The stadium is still under renovation and it seems that I won’t be able to admire the finished stadium until the end of the semester. At least I now have the opportunity to watch a football match of Real Madrid. The current football season is still running…
